FINAL SCORE: 58-0 Coyotes

Preview: SoCal Coyotes @ Los Angeles Scorpions

The Los Angeles Scorpions kicked off their 2017 World Developmental Football League season nearly two weeks ago when they hosted the California Sharks at LA Harbor College.

It was a disappointing 18-14 loss for the Scorpions due to self-inflicted wounds on numerous occasions but the fact of the matter was that the number of mistakes and miscues which prevented a win against the Sharks Aug 26th. They must be kept to a minimum if they want to have a chance to defeat the SoCal Coyotes on Saturday at Whittier College.

The Coyotes are riding high with confidence after destroying the Sharks 73-0 over the weekend and the attention and spotlight will continue to be on Coyotes QB Todd Marinovich.

The forty-eight-year-old quarterback played his college football at USC and was drafted by the Los Angeles Raiders in 1991. After a two-year stint in the NFL, Marinovich was briefly a back-up QB with BC Lions of the Canadian Football League in 1999.

Marinovich returned to professional football in 2000 when he played for the now defunct Los Angeles Avengers of the Arena Football League and set a record by throwing 10 touchdowns in one game against the Houston Thunderbears.

Todd Marinovich was impressive in his debut with the Coyotes as he went 19 of 28 for 262 yards and 7 touchdown passes in his first professional football appearance in seventeen years.

The Los Angeles Scorpions surely will have their hands full on Saturday and will need excellent production from running back Devin Christy and quarterback Shawn Higginbotham.

The Coyotes will be favored on Saturday, but the Scorpions can give themselves plenty of opportunities to win if they execute, move the chains, eliminate unnecessary penalties, superb quarterback play and maintain situational fluidity on both sides of the ball.

When I was asked originally to be the announcer for the Los Angeles Scorpions, it was a request I never truly believed would come to fruition in the way that it transpired. It was relatively unexpected to be quite frank, however the coaching staff among many others who were equally as excited to just be a part of something greater than themselves. I too felt the sense of unity, drive and passion from ownership to coaches and everyone else involved. It was apparent that this wasn’t just an ordinary organization. The ownership, management, coaches and athletes who are not only competing to be noticed for what they do on the field, but what what the Los Angeles Scorpions are committed to doing off the field as well.

When you are a part of any professional organization, you commit to personal ownership which can be interpreted as finding a way to redefine yourself to be the absolute best in what you do. The Scorpions are an organization looking to help athletes achieve much more than individual numbers on a field, touchdowns to score or fumbles they create. I encourage you to come out to a game this year to witness not only the game itself, the football players, the coaches, and the camaraderie. You will see the dedication that this Los Angeles Scorpions team is all about. You will not be disappointed.

You will witness a variety of professionalism, players who are playing as one unit, One Family, and One Voice.
